Bikram’s last and final claim is that hot yoga “dilates capillaries more effectively, oxygenating tissues, muscles, glands, organs and increasing the removal of waste products.

The truth:  Yes, capillaries do dilate with heat. 

Does the dilation of capillaries due to extreme heat during a hot yoga class increase the removal of waste products: NO.

HOT YOGA: Redistributes Fat Into The Bloodstream

untitledBikram’s next claims are some of my all time favorites… And if theses claims were true EVERYBODY would be doing it!  Bikram states that his style of yoga “reorganize the lipids (fatty acids) in the muscular structure, warm muscles burn fat more effectively” and “when we stretch, the fat has no room to sit so it redistributes to the bloodstream which we then use as energy.”

HOT YOGA: Is A Better Cardiovascular Workout

Since when do we do yoga for a cardiovascular work-out? Aren’t we going into the yoga room to become enlightened, to de-stress, to breathe?  Isn’t the physical practice of yoga a moving meditation?  Don’t misunderstand me here, I walked into the yoga room because something inside me knew I was not emotionally or spiritually okay. When I first started practicing yoga (Ashtanga) I finally started breathing.  The TRUTH, my motivation was fueled to practice yoga because it was a great workout, I was hypermobile and my ego was feed being able to practice all the “advanced” postures like scorpion.  Ashtanga and vinyasa flow allowed me to meditate, exercise and breathe all in 1.5 hours.  During this time in my life there were not enough hours in my day to exercise and meditate, nor was my mind even capable of sitting quietly.
